globus - It will go away! - promise

Posted , 24 users are following.

In 2007 I suffered from Globus for 12 months - it got me really down- I couldnt enjoy activities that used to make me happy and was continually worried and thinking the worst.

I saw a number of GP's and got referred to a ENT specialist who checked my throat via a small nasal camera - all clear.

Despite my Dad having this for a while and reassuring me that it does get better I focussed on the symptom and expected it to arrive every day (which it did!)

Gradually it wasn't there one day then would come back - then it may disappear for a few days and then come back - it is a gradual process but once you stop obsessing about it , it will improve. I promise.

My GP treated it as a symptom of anxiety and prescribed prozac - which had no effect. Much as I hate to admit it - my fiancee was right to keep telling me to stop obsessing and try and focus on other things - it is the only way to beat this.

Somedays it still makes an appearance (infact thinking about it now I can bring on the sensation!) but you can make it go - focus on yuor good days and know that there will be gradually be more good than bad - it will go I PROMISE!

Thanks for this, I really wanted someone to check my throat I saw ENT specialist who looked down with mirror but said to use camera I have to have a camera down throat and go into hospital ( private) and have general anaesthetic ! is there a special name for the nasal camera test so I can ask if I can have that instead ? I am sure you are right about obsessing about it but I feel until someone has had a proper look I cant stop worrying about it...my fiance also tells ME to stop obsessing ....trouble is I have had so much trouble with stuff over the last few years Ive forgotten how to live without obsessing...LOL....

Your letter gives me new hope. I have suffered GH for 2 years previously

and changed my job which seemed to solve the problem, it went away.

I now have it again for 7 weeks. Been to my Dr. and prescribed Luvax but

am hesitant to take it as I don,t think I am depressed, just anxious, what do other sufferers think? Good to know that we are not alone.

    Hi

I have been told by my doc that i could have Globus Hystericus, for the last few years i kept having this lump come and go in my throat, and the last few months its been getting worse.

Id dread going to sleep at night, in fear off not waking up.

Now i have to go have a camera down my throat to see if it is that.

I just hope i can get to the bottom of this as it is stressing me out big time.

    Jonny,

Thanks for your post on here. I was going to start a similar one, but saw you'd already done it!

I've \"suffered\" with this for around six months now, and at first I was really, REALLY obsessing about it. I literally worried myself sick thinking all sorts of nonsense.

Eventually I went for an ultrasound on my throat - which was 100% fine - and I thought knowing all was fine would make it go away.... It didn't! I had it for maybe another three or four weeks before I got rid of it for a month or so.

Just this week I can start to feel it again, but to be honest I'm not particularly worried any more. At the end of the day, it does go away. It might take a couple of days or it might take a month, but eventually it does disappear and I'm left wondering what all the fuss was about.

Anybody that's suffering, don't worry. Just focus on keeping your mind occupied, and not dwelling on what's getting you down. You can never expect to feel better if you're focusing on negatives all the time.

Well I had this feeling for about 2 months last year, I got an MRI done on my throat, saw an ENT, and got XRays, with nothing coming back wrong. I was stressed about it, but tried to enjoy what I could. It doesn't hurt, it's just super annoying, a lump at the top of my throat, no a lump though, just this feeling of pressure. It goes away when I'm laying down, and when I'm eating. It doesn't come about until about mid morning, and so I just assumed it was either stress or indigestion problems. It went away just as miraculously as it came. Then a week ago it started again. I'm thinking is it stress, why would it be, I've been way more stressed out then I am right now, is it indigestion, I've changed up my diet to be a little more bland and haven't really had any gas or heartburn. I guess I'll just wait for it to pass again, hopefully it doesn't last anymore than it did last time, it's stressful itself!!

Thanks for your posts, it makes me feel better.

Hi nancy, mine started on and off for the past couple months. Feeling of lump in throat. Some days it's constant all day and I just sit and obsess about it. I have severe daily anxiety and I thought maybe that was causing it. Very scary feeling of choking and worrying your not going to be able to breath

Kim, do you take anything for anxiety to help you?  I started lorazepam when this started. I’ve never been an anxious person. I’m pretty laid back and patient but this sensation is so annoying that I needed something. I take one just before bed. Throughout the day, I drink tons of ice water. It helps a lot. I also have a roll on lavender essential oil that I use throughout the day. I’ve done some deep tissue massage and some very calming myofacial massage as well. It’s not gone away but it helps me in other ways as I too was obsessing over this. I read anything and everything I could to understand this. It has caused me to stay home from any evening activities. I made it through work, but after that it was time for my pity party or just time to relax.  You have to tell yourself that it’s just a sensation, find ways to move forward and you’ll be able to except this sensation easier. That’s where I’m at I guess. I still hate it, but I’m learning to live with it and trying to avoid stress. I avoid eating very much because it’s always worse after I eat. Small tiny portions. Also, carbs and sugars seem to make it worse too. I’ve lost ten lbs due to cutting those out. Win, win!  Ugh!  I’ve tried things that work for me. Do the neck stretching as those help. I feel looking down too much on my cellphone has caused my esophageal sphincter to be irritated also. When I bend my neck, the sensation seems worse.  If you prefer to contact me direct feel free to email me at

Hi Kimberly - my first reply to you hasn’t been sent for some reason so I’ll just send you a quick response here as after it’s verified you’ll most likely still receive it. Hang in there. You will learn to relax and adjust to this new sensation. None of like it, doctors don’t seem to know what to do for it, so we just tolerate it and learn what makes it quieter. I have heard that some doctors will do Botox in the esophagus muscle or something like that. Some have had relief. I’m thinking about trying it but need a referral. I hope you receive my other response soon.

Hi Nancy, thanks for all the advice. Could you please elaborate on the neck exercise which helps? I really hope we can get over this sensation soon!

I’ve been told to stretch my head and chin up as far as you can towards the ceiling. Stretching your chin high. Like you’re shaving your neck I guess.  It feels good, but it’s no cure   Yesterday I started drinking some Tumeric and ginger tea and I really believe that kept my sensation calmer.  hey I’m grasping at straws’s just like everyone else. I will do anything to just keep it the size of a P sensation instead of a golf ball sensation. Ice water all day long. I certainly can’t eat huge potions of anything. Because if I do the sensation is huge again. So it’s definitely connected somehow to digestion I would think and the esophagus  wanting to spasm. Since doctors can’t help much, I keep trying my own remedies. It seems like I can eat apples and be ok.  But I eat absolutely no bread or the sensation comes back as a golf ball and sometimes pain in my chest. Try lavender oil on the outside of your neck. that seems to do great.  Again it doesn’t take it away, but it keeps it calm and feeling smaller. Please ask me any questions as I’ve been dealing with this for six months and I have tried many things. Good luck!

Hello Nancy after a year of going back and forth trying to figure out what’s wrong with my throat the throat specialist told me a had Globus Nancy I know you feel like a lump on your throat but have you ever felt like you had cuts. I had a very bad episode and felt like that. Thanks

I’ve been to 3 specialists a PA and my surgeon has been very empathetic. But no one in our nation seem to have any answers for this. I do NOT feel like there are any cuts. I do however have some phlegm now too which is so annoying. I am going to stick with my turmeric and ginger tea. I really feel that has been calming. So I do omeprozole, Pepcid, lorazepam, an apple cider vinegar pill at bedtime. During the day I am very careful what I eat and I drink tons of water and do my tea. Also at night when I remember I take A TBLS of RAW honey. Anything is worth a try because this is so wrong not to have a cure!!!

My symptoms are very similar. And it's so weird that no one is able to understand it, especially doctors think it's a minor annoyance when it really is not.

I totally agree it's probably related to digestion, for example bread makes it very bad for me too. I find if I am able to burp it gets a lot better. And now sometimes it comes with tightness near the left chest, making it slightly harder to breathe (especially while sitting).

For me sweet juicy fruits (like papaya, apples, etc) make it better and cold water. Also lying down left side helps (if there is no acidity). Thanks for the support and good luck!

Yes, initially I had a cut like feeling, felt like something sharp hanging inside and acid reflux.

      Then this globus feeling started.
